Bryan Salatino

Freeski Program Director
Title: Freeski Program Director
Roles: Coach | Head Coach: Freeski Team

In 1972 when my skiing idol, pro hotdogger Jon Mahanna, formed the Hot Dog Ski Team at Bousquet Ski Area in Massachusetts I couldn’t join fast enough. Every weekend we built jumps and got big air, honed stunt ballet tricks, and learned to ski the hardest lines in icy moguls. In 1974 Jon took me to a professional Freestyle contest at Berkshire East, MA where I foreran the aerials doing spread eagle flyaway front flips in front of my heroes of the sport. I was hooked for life. After a few years of USSA freestyle competition, in 1977 I qualified to compete on the Professional Freestyle Associates Midas World Trophy Tour and also began coaching the powerhouse Bousquet Freestyle team. Around that time I was inspired by old time Bousquet telemark skier Jack Rice to begin dropping the knee. I eventually retired from competition and spent the 80’s and 90’s exploring the backcountry in various epic ski locations across the country. Always intending to return to coaching, it was at the urging of my son Galen that I took on the Smugglers’ Notch Freeski Team head coaching role in 2011. In Big Mountain Freeskiing I have rediscovered the pure skiing essence that made me fall in love with the sport in my youth, and I truly appreciate the rewards of contributing to the positive development of young athletes. I have spent the past several years developing a sustainable competition program at Smugglers’ Notch, while working on a broader scale to develop, grow, and strengthen the infrastructure of our sport.
