Freeski Programs

Welcome to the 2016/17 Season!

Smugglers’ Notch Ski and Snowboard Club Freeski Program Overview (2017)

Our mission is to create Big Mountain Freeskiers who absolutely rip anywhere on the mountain, in any conditions, at any time.  We develop skiers who can rip for a lifetime through special emphasis on risk management and decision making, and mountain hazard awareness.  Our coaches are positive role models who provide a safe and positive learning environment emphasizing core values and physical fitness. Our athletes learn about teamwork and sportsmanship through competition.
The SNSC Freeski Team competes in the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA) Big Mountain Freeride regional and national events. In partnership with the Flyin’ Ryan Hawks Foundation and IFSA our program is leading the way in mountain safety education and core values based risk management and decision making. We are actively involved in the development of IFSA. We developed and piloted the IFSA Flyin Ryan Decisions Program in 2014 (www.flyinryanhawks.org/ifsa-decisions). SNSC hosts an IFSA/FWQ 2-star Freeride competition.
The SNSC Freeski program is available to athletes age 8-18. Alpine and Telemark skiers are welcome. Eligible Freeski athletes ages 12-18 are able to ski the entire mountain, trek into the backcountry, confidently navigate extreme natural terrain, and are focused on Big Mountain Freeskiing competition. Eligible U12 Freeski athletes are able to ski the entire mountain with speed and confidence and plan to participate in one or more Big Mountain Freeskiing competitions.
Freeski team members spend their weekends with coaches exploring Smuggs’ most advanced terrain, both on-piste and in the woods and back bowls, learning how to safely and confidently navigate extreme pitches and natural features. The team has focused training in our park facilities, following progressions to master aerials techniques. For athletes under the age of 12 (U12/U10/U8) programming incorporates gate training to aid technical skill set and fundamentals.
Our coaching staff includes competition hardened professionals and veterans of the backcountry, with backgrounds in alpine and telemark skiing techniques! All coaches are IFSA Level 100 certified or they are working toward certification.
Athletes 12 and under should register as juniors to take advantage of the reduced program fee. Athletes 13 and over should register as seniors. New this year a two-day program is required for athletes age 12-18, and U12 athletes can choose either the one-day or two-day program. One-day U12 athletes can choose at the start of the season to participate on Saturdays or Sundays, and can switch days at any time during the season by notifying the head coach in advance.
Freeski Team practice times for all age groups are Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm.
Weekly coaching updates are provided to all team members via email. Check out our Facebook page "Smugglers’ Notch Freeski Team” for additional communications from the coaching staff and updates from team members.

COMPETITION AND TRAINING

Our competition schedule is selected from the Ski The East Freeride Tour (www.skitheeast.net/freeridetour) and selected IFSA North American Junior Tour events (www.freeskiers.org). All Freeski athletes are encouraged to attend competitions with the team, and coaching resources are prioritized toward supporting competition. We provide coaching support at local and away competitions from January through to April. The training curriculum is planned to prepare team members for each competition event on the schedule. Our 2017 competition schedule will be provided by the Head Coach prior to the start of the ski season.

We provide opportunities for pre-season fitness training and skill development on the trampoline as well as water and airbag aerials facilities. Team members are taught ski tuning and maintenance.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

Coaches are always available for equipment advice, and we prefer that you ask before you buy. Below are general guidelines.

Freeski team members should have all mountain Freeride skis and bindings in good condition, tuned, and sized properly. Optional equipment includes powder skis, climbing skins, and alpine touring bindings. The list goes on.

Helmets are mandatory at all times. Back protectors are highly recommended for training and competition.

This year SNSC Freeski Team sponsor SKIRACK Burlington is offering pro discounts on skis, boots, bindings, and helmets to all Freeski team athletes and coaches.  Additionally, the team receives a 15% discount on all ski shop products and shop services including binding mounting, ski tuning, and repair.
